Vusi Kunene, leader of IRASA said the message they wanted to drive this Mothers Day is that women should create the culture of building communities.

“When we were conceptualising the idea, it was to say that our society is broken and our mothers have become powerless.

“So we said let’s encourage our mothers because they are hanging back.

“We see a lot of crime, drugs that are happening but our mothers are sitting quietly, and doing nothing so today we are saying stand up, let’s get our communities together to bring up the social front that is broken.”

“Mothers play a big role in whatever position they hold. Long gone are the days where mothers were said to be people who cook and take care of the kids but today we see women leading big companies.

“We have mothers out in police uniform fighting crime and come back and be mothers so I believe this day should be celebrated in fact every other day should be celebrated in their honour because they go through challenges and they still show up,” Ndwambi said.

IRASA Leader, Vusi Kunene, celebrates mothers and motherhood, with first Mother’s Day event.

Despite the absence of the City of Johannesburg speaker, Collen Makhubela, who was expected to join the proceedings, Kunene said they were pleased with the turnout.

“It has been amasing, this is the first time ever we do a celebration for Mothers Day with such support from various townships even as far as Brakpan and Ekurhuleni, only two speakers didn’t pitch which didn’t have that effect.

“The discussions were bout women building each other and seeing the women of our area be inspired is far greater.”
