According to the information previously given by one of the taxi drivers who wanted to remain unnamed, Eldorado Taxi Association owners demand a profit of R1200 daily from the drivers and for them this amount is absurd given the number of taxis currently on the road.

The taxi driver further alleged that after they have asked the association for meetings to address the issue of salary increase, their requests were not attended to and on the day they went on a protest a private security company was called to monitor the situation although the taxi drivers showed no signs of violence or intimidation.

He added that police were then called to the scene and they started firing rubber bullets to disperse the drivers and some of them sustained minor injuries from the ordeal.

Eldos Urban sent an inquiry regarding the incident to the Eldorado Taxi Association chairperson, Salim Bosman.

He has responded and said “We hear and understand that there is a problem between the some drivers and operators ( members).

We need to intervene between the two because there is a serious communication breakdown.

“We have regular meetings with drivers, and our last meeting was on March 19 were the above frustrations were raised and noted.”

He added that they also informed drivers that their grievance will be addressed, but due to their AGM that came up in May, their schedule to have a follow-up meeting was postponed and communicated to the drivers.

“The driver salary is a matter discussed with employer and employee because there are different options when it comes to basic salaries in our industry and we have established a committee with the drivers for us to communicate better as an association.”
