Erwin Pon, chairman of the Chinese Association said, “Education and reading are important elements of the Chinese culture.

“Our parents have taught us that the world can steal everything from you but not your knowledge and the foundation of knowledge is reading.”

Literature is one of the best ways to help kids understand something without necessarily having to experience it for themselves. It helps with building the children’s understanding of humanity and the world around them.

According to Steve Tsakiris, executive director at Rise to Read, it is important to teach children how to read and understand what they are reading from the early stages of their lives.

When learners are denied the ability to read and only pushed when they reach high school level, it becomes difficult for them to catch up with other learners.

“We have about 75% of Grade four learners that are functionally illiterate, meaning they can read the words but they cannot understand the content. So it is exceptionally important to start reading at an early age to instil the language,” Tsakiris explained.

Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language.

It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects once they get to school.

“To read and own a book is the most essential part for a child. Books can take you anywhere, widen the learner’s imagination and we believe this book will help them solve conflicts verbally,” said Pon.
