SA music industry mourns Costa Titch

The young hip hop star had just signed a deal with Konvict Kulture shortly before his death.

The South African Hip Hop community has been dealt another blow as news of Costa Titch’s death sent the country in shock.

Costa Titch, real name Constantinos Tsobanoglou collapsed and died while performing at the Ultra Music festival in Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg over the weekend.

The Nelspruit born artist began his career as a dancer for trio group New Age Steez which saw him working with Cassper Nyovest before getting his big break when he released his first single Activate, shooting him into the limelight.

As one of African rap music pioneers as he often referred to himself, garnered lots of attention from music lovers for his multilingual verses in his lyrics, Pantsula influences to his fashion sense and township flare.

His versatile style and lyrical abilities – laced on trap and kwaito beats made him a household name, winning the hearts of many music lovers across the country.

The 28-year-old grew prominent after he released a successful collaboration song with late rappers AKA and Ricky Rick, Nkalakatha remix in 2019, which went on to win Best Collaboration and Best Remix at the SA Hip Hop awards.

Another career milestone was the massive success of his single, Big Flexa, which currently sits on 46 million streams on YouTube. The hit single reached four times certified multi-platinum.

The song recently bagged an award at the Soundcity MVP award in Nigeria and earlier this year, released a remix of the song with Akon.

He released his acclaimed debut album Made in Africa in 2020 and has worked with a long list of SA’s favourite rappers like Boity, Youngsta CPT, Nasty C, 25k, Maphorisa, Rouge and many others over his career.

Titch, at the time of his death had recently signed an international deal with Akon’s record label, Konvict Kulture.

Akon, who paid a tribute in an Instagram post, described him as a superstar and hardworking man. He said the label had lost a brother.

“I remember when Babs played me his record for the first time; I was convinced that he was going to make an impact in this world.

“Costa Titch had a vision that I knew for sure would take over the music industry globally and was on his way to doing just that when God’s plan intervened,” parts of his tribute read.

While the reason behind his death is yet to be confirmed, Costa Titch was rumored to have suffered from a seizure allegedly triggered by the flashing stage lights. According to reports, the artist has been known to suffer from Epilepsy.

Video footage of his performance on Saturday shows him collapsing on stage. The video shows that he fell and got up shortly after and carried on performing before he collapsed again.

A different video angle of when he was down shows dancers and security rushing to his side before he was whisked away to backstage.

An official statement released on Sunday confirmed the death of the artist. The family thanked emergency responders and people who aided the rapper during his last hours and has asked for privacy.

“It is with deep pain that we find ourselves having to acknowledge his passing at this time…. As a family we are faced with a difficult time as we try to make sense of what has befallen us and ask that we be afforded the time and space to gather ourselves.”

The tragic news of Costa Titch’s passing comes a month after the death of Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes’s who was gunned down last month.
