New soccer tournament flavour to Kasi football

According to organisers, preparations had already begun to host its Top 32 tournament scheduled to start in May.

Future Stars Football Development recently concluded its soccer tournament, DOBSONVILLE COMMUNITY GAMES, after tense semi- finals and finals over the last weekend.

The tournaments which were played at the Caltex Grounds in Ext 2 had locals come out in numbers to the sports ground in recent weeks.

A showdown between Citizens Vs Moscow during Dobsonville Community Games, a new soccer tournament for local teams.

It previously hosted its first tournament in February which proved to be a success with locals and participating teams. The winner FC 20 from Dobsonville won a cash prize and a Cup after beating Tee Dee Warriors from Braamfischerville.

“We are excited to have a comeback of local football. The talent in the township is raw and we know that these teams are hungry for such games,” explains Sihle Gumede of Future Stars Football Development.

The tournament was established by members of Future Stars, a soccer team from the area.

Its latest tournament was played two weekends on February 25th-26th and 4th and 5th of March which consisted of 16 teams from various townships.

Fan favourites, Giyani Super Stars from Tembisa and Glen Eleven from Protea Glen went head to head which finished in a draw, with both sides tied sitting on 2-2 score at full time, leading to penalties.

The tense encounter saw Giyani Super Stars winning the tournament with a 3-0 penalty score beating Soweto side Glen Eleven.

The Tembisa team got a first prize win of R22k while rivals Glen Eleven secured second place walking away with R10 000.

“We are thrilled at how the tournaments have been going and the response of the community to what we are doing,” Gumede said.

“This is one of the ways to uplift the community through sports development. The tournaments empower the community through temporary employment opportunities.”

Future Stars Football Development cited that they were also looking for sponsors as they wanted to see the community benefiting from these tournaments annually.
