“We hope they will add value to the community because we should build our economy and become future employers.”

These students did not only graduate and receive certificates; however they were also given starter kits which will help them kick start their journey as hair stylists and young business-oriented individuals.

“We give them starter kits, so they can set up at home and actually start making money and grow from there,” said Vilakazi.

According to Obakeng Mathibe, ambassador for Godrej Style Academy, the real motivation behind their academy was actually the state of South Africa’s socio-economic standing.

“We felt it is very important as the organisation that our focus be on empowering the youth. Not in the sense of coming in and giving donations through CSI, but we wanted to look into a programme that will allow them to have the opportunity to build their own businesses,” said Obakeng.

Programmes like these have become a positive response to the alleviation of poverty and unemployment in the black community.

These are also projects that sustain the future of the youth of South Africa and be the change they are looking for.

“If you want to change and see yourself move forward, do the work. There is no substitute for hard work except to pit in the work.
