All hands on deck for a local orginisation with clean up campaign

The cleaning campaign which was joined by ward councillor, Brenda Dammie and the City of Johannesburg Environmental and Infrastructure team saw about 80 volunteers working up a sweat.

ASEZ WAO hosted an environmental clean-up campaign near Leresche Elementary School in Orlando East and Noodgesig on December 11.

ASEZ WAO, which means ‘Save the Earth from A to Z We are One Family’, is an international volunteer organisation composed of young office workers from the Church of God with 3.3 million members in 7500 churches in 175 countries.

The organisation also serves in various fields such as environmental protection, educational support, welfare promotion, emergency relief, and cultural exchange activities.

The cleaning campaign which was joined by ward councillor, Brenda Dammie and the City of Johannesburg Environmental and Infrastructure team saw about 80 volunteers working up a sweat.

The volunteers where divided into three teams which worked together to clean up the areas.

ASEZ WAO Johannesburg Manager, Jacob Kang said the name of their organisation encourages them to work together to ensure that the environment is well taken care of.

“We are one family and we consider the community as our family, we also believe that we should always work together to keep our environments as clean as we can,” Kang said.

From the beginning to end of the cleaning campaign, the teams were seen picking up trash and refuse in the illegal dumping sites.

The cleaning lasted for about three hours and 500 bags with a capacity of 50 litres were filled with various items such as milk cartons, disposable nappies, plastics, magazines and branches.

Councillor Dammie cheered for the youth volunteers and said. “It is so great to see the youth taking action and cleaning together.

“I wish all young people to join this activity. Keep up the good work and please invite me to the next clean-up.”

Thato Maphike said many residents want to live in a clean environment however they may be afraid to take the first step.

“As ASEZ WAO, we are very happy to take the lead in cleaning the environment together with our communities.”
