Despite the rainy weather, emotional scenes played out as community members who converged outside the court, chanted songs and called for the suspects to rot in jail.

Scenes outside the Orlando Magistrates court as suspects linked to tavern shooting appear before the courts.

Meanwhile inside the court proceedings, the families who had been waiting in the congested court room could be seen choking back tears as the accused took to the dock.

Funeka Mntsantsa who flew in from Cape Town described the incident as horrific experience she wouldn’t wish on any parent.

Mntsantsa’s 25-year-old son survived the brutal shooting and is currently still in hospital.

“I trust God despite everything that happened. This is my last born in hospital and we did not think he would make it. He was the one who we relied on but he now he can’t walk or do anything for himself,” she said.

Her son who was in ICU for a month was riddled with 13 bullets and as a result had to undergo emergency operations to have both his legs amputated.

“As I was sitting behind them, my emotions were shaken but I asked God for strength because I have forgiven them and I do not hate them. They are still so young and one looked like my son’s age. I felt pain for them because this is the devil’s work.”

Another parent, Siziwe Mngonyama who lost a son in the incident said they still need answers on why their kids were killed in such a brutal manner.

Families of victims who died in the tavern shooting in Orlando West informal settlement sit in the congested room as they await for court proceedings to get underway.

She further said they would not let the suspects get away with murder.

“We want them to stay in jail. They must not be given any bail,” She said. “It’s still hard and every time we see their faces, we relive the pain.

“These people don’t deserve to live. The death penalty must come back so they can die. They deserve it for killing our children without any reason. It is foreign people who commit these crimes in our country.

“It is even appalling that they get to have representation when they committed such a crime,” an emotional Mngonyama told Urban News.

Cllr of ward 30, Mohau Molefe said they strongly hope the state will oppose bail. He also revealed that a latest victim died on last week bringing the death toll to 17.

“We strongly hope that the state will oppose bail so that these families that you see do not get more enraged as it becomes more intense,” Molefe said.

“All we want is for them to remain behind bars and we will continue to support these families as we push to make sure they don’t get bail.”
