Finalists for Gauteng 2022 Sports Awards announced

“We are going to be doing things a little different by forming partnership with private entities where necessary and make sure we develop as many talents as we can."

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Art, Culture and Recreation, Morakane Mosupyoe officially announced finalists of the Gauteng 2022 Sports Awards at the Orlando Stadium on November 3.

The announcement follows a rigorous adjudication process which was led by an independent panel made of experienced individuals in sport, media and academia.

Some of the 2022 finalits are Oliver Mphahlele and Nelly ‘Manellys’ Kubayi who are nominated for Best Sport Fan of the Year.

The 2022 Sports Awards consist of 20 different categories and residents were given an opportunity to nominate their favourite individuals or teams.

“We need to appreciate and celebrate all the people who have participated in South African sports.

“The fact that they are doing something that they love within their areas and see it as competition means a lot to the department, so I think they should be appreciated,” MEC Mosupyoe said.

She added that the department is recognising and rewarding talent and nothing can be better than supporting the nominees and South Africans in sports.

According to the MEC the winners of the 11th annual Gauteng Awards will receive an estimated five percent increase on their cash prices and the amounts will be announced on the day.

“One of the things the department aims at is encouraging sports in the townships and ensuring that we build and upgrade sporting infrastructure. This however will not happen overnight and serious planning is needed.”

Members of the KAD Volley Ball Club: Rayane Nana, Tarryn Sita SIghn and Priya Bagratic were nominated for the Virtual sport recreation programme implemented (including e-gaming).

 

She added that the department is going to be working with businesses in the private sector in spotting talent in the townships.

“We are going to be doing things a little different by forming partnership with private entities where necessary and make sure we develop as many talents as we can.

“One of the three companies we are working with has identified young boys aged 11 who have a passion for sports, so the capacity is there and young people will have a chance to success.”

Charles Baloyi, Gauteng Sports Awards 2016 sport journalist of the year winner encouraged the department to not under look other categories such as photographer of the year.

“Everyone should be acknowledged in their respective fields and photography is one of them because without pictures there is no story,” Baloyi said.

The categories for the 2022 Gauteng Sports Awards are:

1.Sport Personality of the Year:
2. Sportsman of the Year
3. Sportswoman of the Year
4. Sports Team of the Year Female
5.Sports Team of the Year Male
6 .Disabled Sportswoman of the Year
7. Disabled Sportsman of the Year
8. Disabled Sports Team of the Year
9. Coach of the Year
10. Most Promising athlete of the Year
11. Technical Official of the Year
12. Sports Federation of the Year
13. Administrator of the Year
14. Amayanga -Yanga athlete of the year
15. Sports Fan of the Year
16. Community-based Sport and Recreation programme of the year
17.Online/ Virtual sport or recreation programme implemented (including e-gaming)
18. Community sports media of the Year
19. Sports Journalist of the year (This includes print media, radio and television)
20. Lifetime Achievement Award (chosen by MEC)
