Kliptown fire victims get homes after three weeks

About 18 households with about 70 heads were destroyed.

On October 24 the MMC for housing in the City of Johannesburg, Councillor Anthea Leitch allocated about 25 new shacks to the community of Kliptown whose shacks burned down during the fire incident three weeks ago.

The way that the fire spread was so fast that within 50 minutes the place was covered with smoke and all the shacks were burned down.

About 18 households with about 70 heads were destroyed.

Councillor Leitch said, “To the families that lost everything, I know that this contribution from the city is just a step towards the rebuilding of your lives.

“I hope you will be able to make a home here and that the city will continue to support not only you but all of Kliptown with the commitment of delivering municipal services to you every day.”

Mbavhalelo Rambau from the Housing department reassured the residents that the land belongs to the department and that one will take them out.

“You’ll stay until there are RDPs allocated to you.

“No one will come to claim the land, this is your home,” she said.
