Local karatekas take part in the Gauteng championships

Out of the 35 karatekas that took part in the trials the Kofukan South Africa team scooped 54 medals including 25 gold medals, 19 silver medals and 10 bronze medals.

The Shito-Ryu Karate-do represented Diepkloof in the recent Johannesburg Elite and Development Karate Championships which were held in Malboro, Sandton from October 15 to 16.

The team joined forces with its sister-branches from Brits and Thambazimbi and formed the Kofukan South Africa Team which trained tirelessly to prepare for the trials.

The karate trials are held every year in October and the recent ones were held to kick start the 2023 season.

The team entered 35 karate athletes for the Johannesburg Regional Trials, 12 of these karatekas were Elite athletes and 23 were development karatekas.

Shito-Ryu Karate-do sensei, Thabo Molubi congratulated the athletes who took part in the trials and those who were awarded for their hard work and participation.

“Five of our athletes managed to get awards and regional colours for the 2021/2022 season.

“They are Shito-Ryu Karate-do and all our elite karatekas who took part on October 15 and they were successful in all their divisions,” Molubi said.

Danika Stephansen, Tshepang Lechaba, Koos Mzizi and Kabelo Mathamelo won gold medals for kumite, and Keagan Burger won a silver medal for Kumite.

“In October, our development athletes competed in the competition and we entered a total of 23 athletes, all of them were also successful in their respective divisions and won medals.”

Some of the athletes are Karabo Maduna and Hollla Rangono who won gold medals for Kata & Gold medals for Kumite and Marlene Visagie who won a silver medal Kata & Gold medal kumite.

“All these karatekas have qualified to represent the Johannesburg Region in the upcoming Gauteng Provincial Karate Championships that will be held in February 2023.

“I am extremely happy with my team and their determination that they have shown over the years.”
