EFF displeased by the state of Slovo Cemetery in a protest

They said they were saddened that people had to pay a lot of money to bury their loved ones in such a despicable conditions and further comparing it to a jungle.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in ward 53 took to the streets on Friday, October 14, to the Slovoville cemetery to voice their dissatisfaction at the current state of the cemetery park in Soweto.

The march which began in Green Village was led by the Ward 53 EFF Chairperson Sunnyboy ‘Sonia’ Mukhabela, Deputy Chairperson Morris Kwidzhili with other members of the Branch Command Team and support of the CPF sought to submit a memorandum of demands to the management of the cemetery.

The Red Berates allege that the cemetery is being neglected by it management and the premises is not being serviced as it ought to be.

They said they were saddened that people had to pay a lot of money to bury their loved ones in such a despicable conditions and further comparing it to a jungle.

“The cemetery is not being serviced, there is no grass cutting which leads to no pathways at the cemetery.

“The cemetery is dirty and filled with weeds and no maintenance of the cemetery is being done there.

“There is also the issue of security, which has led to the stealing and damage of tombstones due to lack of security personnel on site,” said Mukhabela.

Another issue was the high rate charged by the cemetery.

The memorandum was handed over by the Chairperson Sunnyboy Sonia Mukhabela and was received Mbali Mkwanazi, who is the Manager of Slovoville cemetery who promised the group that the management would revert back with feedback after 14 days.

Chairperson Mukhabela said if an agreement is not reached, they would be pushing for the cemetery park to be publicized and the people will bury their loved ones for free.
