MTN goes big for local school

Local telecommunications giant, MTN South Africa surprised Uvuyo Lower Primary School with a R50 000 cheque.

“We want to give ordinary South Africans a win. It’s been a very tough year, economic climate and people need something to look forward to.

“They need some hope and this is what we hope to do with this campaign,” said Lee-Aan Chetty, Senior manager for Communications and Public Relations at MTN.

The campaign started at Noord taxi rank and surprised over 100 commuters with paid taxi fare to their destinations, free grocery, electricity and data vouchers.

The biggest winner of the day, Abraham Xhorile from the institution who was chosen for his devotion and dedication towards the school won a free helicopter ride.

“We are sure the school will use the money where there is a need but we wanted to close the loop with their stuff member being our winner.

“We thought we also should spread the love to the school, learners and teaching staff.”

Adding to this, she explained that giving back to communities was something the company was passion about.

“Our involvement within communities in which we operate in is a big priority for MTN.

“We do believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connectivity and aside from this campaign, the Mtn Foundation, does a lot of work in communities particularly in education and schools,” she concluded.

The unsuspecting Principal, Sibongile Buthelezi expressed immense gratitude to the company.

She said the initiative would be a major boost to the school, adding that some of the funds will go towards the up keeping of the school as this was often limited.

“The donation comes during a time when we were looking to revamp and refurbish the play area for our Grade R learners.

“We thank MTN for plaguing back into our communities and township institutions where such donations will have great impact for our learners in the long run.”

The 730 learner’s and staff at the institution were also treated to lunch pack, stationary and free data.
