The sporting tournament is in partnership with former SA soccer legends, in response to the exclusion of Youth from participating in the economic space of the country and in positions of influence, particularly from Soweto, as this was one of Mama Winnie’s biggest concerns.

The event will also seek to spearhead development at grassroots level for aspiring female football players and offer alternatives that will add value to our youth and help fight the scourge of drugs and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and GBV among other social ills while promoting mass youth participation.

“This collaboration between the Banyana Banyana Legends and Mama Winnie Commemorative Blanket Team couldn’t have come at a better time, where women in country are emerging and claiming their rightful space in key areas of authority,” said Wendy Makhoba, Commemorative Blanket and Projects NPC Director.

“We have partnered with Former Banyana Banyana captain and Africa’s top goal scorer Portia Modise in this year’s Mama Winnie Commemorative Blankets tournaments.

“Even long after she has left the game, she is still fighting for gender equality in football. Portia Modise’s fight is synonymous with what Mama Winnie went through in the fight for a better and free South Africa,” she continued.
