The early morning programme started off at the Hillbrow Flats which is the place where Julies was shot. The wall of remembrance was erected there.

Harris spoke about the day she gave birth to Julies and how she always knew that he would be a special child.

McKenzie said: “Your child had to die for us to rise. Nathaniel Julies was killed by his heroes, let that sink in for a moment. He thought that he was going to his protectors but instead he was going to his killers.

“The police killed Nathaniel Julies, he did not commit suicide or get bumped by a car. He was killed by a police issued weapon by the police. Let us not come and say that the case is still on-going.”

The court case has to restart in October after the presiding Judge, Ramarumo Monama suddenly died this year.

The three officers; Scorpion Ndyalvane, Cayleen Whiteboy, and Voster Netshiongolo are the accused in the murder case.

‘Here lies the most innocent victim the police ever killed. He fell, and we rose and still we shall rise,’ these are the words engraved on the tombstone in Klipspruit West.

The tombstone has a symbolic biscuit on it as Julies loved biscuits and was killed while coming from a shop after he bought biscuits.

The truck where Julies was shot is also represented on the tombstone.

As the family waits for justice, the community will always be reminded of the day they rose up against the killing of the innocent 16-year-old.
