According to Sergeant Roxanne Gibb, protesters gathered at Walter Sisulu Square before they marched to Kliptown and Eldorado Park police stations to hand over their memorandums.

The chairperson of the ANC Zone 3 Johannesburg Region, Bafana Ramoneng addressed the gathering. He indicated that the march was not to fight the police but to create awareness concerning GBV and violent crimes such as the mass killings occurring nationwide.

“It cannot be so that in our own country we must surrender our security, when in fact we have our own police,” he said.

He further highlighted that the expectation from all citizens is that the SAPS enforce the law with the support of the JMPD. This partnership would mean that by-laws will be enforced as well.

Some of the demands that were made in the memorandums include police visibility in all wards, more satellite police stations, by-law enforcement, liquor licensing issues and the violation thereof and the revival of patrollers throughout the cluster.

Other demands were for contact numbers of the station commanders and sector managers to be made available to all residents.

There were also concerns to address issues such as cable theft, GBV, police killings, police brutality and corruption.

Brigadier Lloyd represented the management of both Eldorado Park and Kliptown SAPS. He indicated his acknowledgment of all the issues raised on both memorandums by signing an acknowledgment.

He further stated that the concerns of the community are that of the SAPS as well.

Brigadier Lloyd mentioned that there will definitely be a response to all the concerns raised in the memorandums within the stipulated time frame of 14 days, if not before then.
