The newly built facility was officially unveiled to the public during a ribbon cutting ceremony which was attended by residents of Kliptown, friends of KYP from other countries, local community leaders, the business fraternity and former members of the programme.

Not only will the new KYP campus bring more education opportunities for children in Kliptown and surrounding communities, it will also be a community centre with a holistic approach to community development.

KYP’s founder and Executive Director, Thulani Madondo appealed to residents to take ownership of this new facility and protect it as it is meant to bring hope to the children and the whole community.

“I know that we might have some security concerns for this centre but the best way to protect it is for the community to take ownership.

“If you decide to steal from this centre, it means you are stealing from yourself and from your children,” said Madondo.

The new KYP campus boast 20 classrooms, a much bigger computer room with new laptops and internet connection, a play area, kitchen, boardroom, library and offices for the staff.

This means that the programme will now reach even more children from Kliptown and surrounding communities. In keeping up with their mandate of promoting education and eradicating illiteracy, KYP will also extend its services to more adults.

Madondo said, “We have had a number of our mothers, brothers, sisters as well as our fathers indicating to us that they don’t know how to write their names and they would like to learn.

“So we believe that this new facility will allow us to do that for our community.”

Madondo further added that they plan on making the new campus a matric rewrite centre for those who wish to further their studies. Other community organisations such as stokvels and even political parties will also be welcome to host their meetings at the centre, provided they book in advance.

Maadondo thanked all the sponsors who made the new development a success, especially the Torto family from the US, Bidvest and the community for the support they have shown to the KYP over the years.

The new campus is not just a beacon of hope for the poverty stricken community of Kliptown but it is also a symbol of dedication and hard work Madondo and his team of young people have put in since 2007.

With no government backing and only relying on international donors, the KYP has helped produce graduates who are now able to take care of their families.

15 years later, the organisation takes care of 902 children who not only get education but also get served meals every day.
