46th Youth Day commemoration

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Sarafina which portrays the black South African Struggle to freedom.

Premier David Makhura and other dignitaries gathered at Morris Isaacson High School in Jabavu this morning to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the fallen heroes who were brutally killed on June 16, 1976.

The commemoration was under the theme, ‘Promising Sustainable livelihoods and resilience of young people for a better tomorrow’.

During the commemoration, Premier Makhura unveiled the Gauteng Youth Advisory Panel and the Gauteng Youth Development Strategy.

The panel members were drawn from various sub-sectors and structures such as youth organisations, professional bodies, business, labour, academia, faith based organisations, non-governmental, disability organisations and LGBTIQ+ organisations.

While introducing the panel which consists of 15 young people, the premier mentioned that the youth advisory panel will provide strategic policy advice to the provincial government on all matters of youth development in Gauteng.

The premier also asked that the government stop asking for experience from young people when they are looking for opportunities.

“Today we move forward with the acknowledgement of the centrality of the role of young people. And we say that we want to mobilise this energy, this potential and translate it into a force of changing the current situation,” said Premier Makhura.

“The world we live in faces a lot of challenges, climate changes and so forth, and therefore there is a need to adapt.”

He also added that the government wants the youth to grow in a peaceful country. “We have many development strategies for the youth, which are there to help the youth,” he said.

The premier mentioned that the biggest challenge amongst the youth in Gauteng is that there are about 2.2 million young people who are not in employment, not in education and not in training.

Towards the end of the service, the congregation was blessed with a live performance from the legendary South African writer Mbongeni Ngema.
