The benefits of collagen

Collagen is the protein that primarily makes up your skin, bones and tendons.

COLLAGEN, a long-standing protein, has recently surged in popularity, particularly in the beauty and multivitamin industries. This resurgence prompts the question of whether it’s a worthwhile investment.

While collagen products are a part of a booming market right now, many remain unfamiliar with what it is and its uses. Dr Naseeba Kathrada, a general practitioner, describes collagen as ‘the most abundant protein found in our bodies’.

It plays diverse biological roles, leading to its classification into four types, based on its locations.

“You find collagen in your muscles and your tendons; it can be found when [your body is] trying to build your connective tissue. It’s also found in between your discs and in your vertebra. It’s the main component of reticular fibres that are in your eyes, your skin, your blood vessels, your kidneys and in your inner ear, and it acts as a shock absorber,” says Kathrada.

With most supplements, the public focus is on what can this product do for me? The same applies to collagen. Due to its abundance, collagen offers numerous advantages, which include enhanced skin elasticity and hydration; relief from joint pains like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis; prevention of bone loss; muscle mass improvement, heart health support; enhancements in nails, hair, brain health and gut health and weight loss.

Despite collagen’s widespread acclaim, there are some downsides to it. Collagen supplements may trigger side effects such as digestive problems, heartburn, diarrhoea, nausea and feelings of fullness and heaviness in the stomach, particularly for those with common food allergies. It is advisable to talk with a healthcare professional before taking supplements.

Despite the side effects and possible risks associated with collagen, there is a method behind the madness. The newfound life found in collagen could be the right step in encouraging a better standard of living for people everywhere.
