Arts festival provides platform for youth to shine

The festival will boast an array of arts and culture activities, sporting events and entertainment, including performances by Dance Movement.

SOUTH Durban youth will get the opportunity to showcase their various talents at the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation’s (WACO) second Wentworth Youth Arts Festival, set to take place at the Transhaven Centre in Treasure Beach on December 10, at 10:00.

Jarryd Watson, an artistic director and the founder of the Dance Movement project, which is administered under WACO, said the programme will kick off with a touch rugby tournament.

He said that Dance Movement will later showcase their end-of-year production.

“The production will include the Arts in School programme competition, where pupils from primary schools, such as Brighton Beach, Bushlands, Assegai and Gardenia, among others, will showcase a short musical. Their performances will showcase themes based on the life skills and creative arts CAPS curriculum and what Dance Movement facilitators taught the learners at their schools to prepare them for the competition.

“Judges will adjudicate the competition, and the top three schools will receive prizes. This is a great celebration of our youth and an opportunity for children as it provides them with a space that exposes their great talents and skills,” said Watson.

Tickets are priced at R60 (adults) and R20 (children 12 and under). For more information, contact Watson on 082 683 9665.
