Dioramas show innovation of transport

Each year the Natal Diecast Model Collectors present some surprising dioramas during the Rod Guérin Diorama Competition. With this year’s theme being Transport Through The Ages it was no different as a high standard of dioramas were on display again.

The winner for 2019 was none other than Kevin Taylor, who has often taken the honours in this competition from the other two regular participants, Richard Hebbron and Neville Geddes.

Natal Diecast Model Collectors, Neville Geddes, Kevin Taylor – winner of the Rod Guérin Diorama trophy, Richard Hebbron and Dusan Milanovic – the NDMC’s Enthusiast of the Year with the Geoff Sear floating trophy.

All three entrants had unique interpretations of the theme. Richard depicted “Ford Through Time” and displayed various Ford models atop a huge clock. Fords dating from 1909 through to 1998 were arranged around the face of the clock. There was a Model T, Ford Jeep – used in service during WW2, Ford Corsair – a car Richard owned and drove himself in his youth, a Ford Anglia – a car his wife owned, Ford Capri and Ford Explorer were some of the Fords that made up his diorama.

Neville’s display literally depicted the theme, Transport Through The Ages, with models dating back to horse drawn carriages, beautiful steam and gas engines and finally models depicting the internal combustion engine, with a model of an 1886 Benz Patent Motor-Wagen taking the focal point on his diorama.

Kevin’s winning diorama was named, Kevin’s BMC Garage, and displayed vehicles manufactured over time by the British Motor Corporation and Great Britain. From an old horse and carriage to the modern day car, some of the models included The Sunbeam motorcycle and sidecar, a London double-decker bus, Morris Minor, MG, Austin, Mini, Triumph and Jaguar.

The garage diorama included English memorabilia like old petrol tanks, oil cans, tool boxes and pictures of British cars displayed on the walls. Kevin’s BMC Garage came complete with lights and included some history on Evelyn Ellis, who owned the very first motor car in the British Isles in 1895.
The chairman of the NDMC Philip Ellis thanked the contestants for their enthusiasm and support towards the competition each year. He presented the annual Geoff Sear Floating Trophy for Enthusiast of the Year to Dusan Milanovic.

The NDMC meets on the last Monday of every second month: January, March, May, July, September and November; at the VCC in Kloof.
