TUESDAY, 6 FEBRUARY: Stainbank Women’s Institute (WI) meets for the first time this year at Yellowwood Park Civic Centre at 9am for 9.30am. The WI looks forward to seeing all members, new members and its many friends and visitors. Do not forget the animal charity this month which needs help to assist with the many abandoned animals which are now in the area.

 

THURSDAY, 8 FEBRUARY: South African Military History Society’s monthly meeting takes place at the Murray Theatre, 1st floor Civil Engineering Building, UKZN Howard College campus at 7pm for 7.30pm. Speakers will be Dr Mark Coghlan, who will talk about ‘Part 2: Moscow Tram Stop’. The main talk will be presented by Major Peter Williams, who is back by popular request, to share about ‘32 Battalion, My Formative Years’. Go along and join in for an interesting evening of military history. All are welcome. Call Roy Bowman on 084-951-2921.

 

THURSDAY, 8 FEBRUARY: Montclair Senior Citizens Club meets in the Montclair Methodist Church hall at 9am for 9.30am. All seniors in the area are welcome to to enjoy a social morning. Refreshments are R5 and raffle tickets are available at R1 each. Subs are due and have increased to R35 per annum.

 

SATURDAY, 10 FEBRUARY: Birdlife Port Natal beginner’s bird course starts at 9am and ends at 1pm, with David Allen and Steve Davis at the Paradise Valley Conference Centre. Cost to Bird Life members is R80, members of the public pay R95 and juniors U18 are R60. Call Lesley Frescura to book on 083-231-3408 or email galefra@mweb.co.za

SUNDAY, 11 FEBRUARY: Birdlife Port Natal meets at Brettenwood Coastal Estate at 6.30am. To attend, call Rex Aspeling on 082-301-8177 by Saturday to arrange an access code. Attendees will need their driver’s license and an access code for entry into the estate. Tables and chairs are not necessary but take your own coffee and something to eat. Everyone attending will pay R20 to the community centre. There are two hides, virgin forest, nine dams and an extensive green belt.

 

TUESDAY, 13 FEBRUARY: Birdlife Port Natal members visit Krantzkloof Interpretive Centre at 9.30am for 10am. Tea and coffee is provided and an entrance of R30 is charged. A speaker will be advised.

 

SUNDAY, 18 FEBRUARY: Mountain Backpackers’ Club explores the Howick area at Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve. This lovely 15km day hike in a beautiful area offers great views and a chance to see plenty of game and birdlife. There are several trail variations. As it can be hot this time of year, the club will keep to high ground in this combined hike with other clubs. Last booking by Wednesday, 14 February. R30 per person. SUNDAY, 28 FEBRUARY: Mountain Backpackers’ Club hosts a day hike in the Howick area at ‘The Ambers’. This combined hike with other clubs has lovely views around Howick and surrounding areas, with plenty of game and birdlife. A maximum of 12 members will be accommodated, first come first served. Last booking will be taken by Wednesday, 24 January. Cost is R20 per person. This 26km hike is graded two plus. Email hike leader Keith Ashton at keimarg@iuncapped.co.za

 

Join up with TAFTA Bluff

TAFTA Bluff meets every Monday at 9.30am at Bluff Methodist Church, on the corner of Westley and Pearce roads.

All seniors over 55 years of age, both men and women, are welcome to join this fun group.

THE Mountain Backpackers’ Club invites anyone interested in backpacking who would like some hints and tips, to attend its new members’ evening to be held at Sherwood Bowling Club on Thursday evening, 22 February at 6.30pm.

Non-members are asked for a nominal contribution towards club costs for of R10 per person at the door, while entry for members is free. For enquiries, email info@mountainpackapackers.co.za
