Office party do’s and dont’s

Picture this: You’ve been a model employee the whole year and are looking to relax at the office party.

Relaxing, a Savanna or three and a Mandoza song later, you’re fired. What did you do? Did you tell your office crush you liked him? Did you tell your boss that you don’t like her policy on shorts at work? Here are the dos and most importantly, don’ts of the office Christmas party.

Dos

– Be polite
Everybody has had a long year. The last thing they need is a rude person ruining their vibe. Be cordial to your co-workers and notice social cues. Don’t choose the one day of the year where all your co-workers can relax to be obnoxious.

– Mind your liquor
There is nothing as irritating in a social setting as someone who is drunk. Especially if they insist on being inappropriate. Sure, we all like having a drink or two once in a while but know your limit, especially when with co-workers. Falling all over the place will have your boss looking at you in a very different light.

– Respect personal space
Look, just because you have a crush on someone does not mean you have to hit on them during the Christmas party. Not only will things turn awkward really fast but it might make for an uncomfortable workspace the following Monday. As stated earlier, take social cues and know when to talk about things or touch someone.

– Set the mood
While we’re not all work clowns or the life of the party, you can add to the festivities by introducing a (tasteful) game or busting out board games. Nothing brings people together like a couple of beers, good food and 30 Seconds. Trust us.

Don’ts

– Don’t talk shop
Your colleagues have had a long stressful year. The last thing they want to do is talk about work and the office. Find a topic that people will find entertaining. Whether it’s Game of Thrones, a new model of a cellphone or general global news, talk about anything everyone can have an input on. PS: Religion, politics and sex are taboo.

– Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not
While it’s okay to put up a protective front in the workplace, it is alright to be yourself at the work party. As long as being yourself doesn’t translate to being an absolute pain. Be yourself and know that is enough.

– Don’t be alone
What do we mean? Socialise! The whole reason you’re at the Christmas party is to unwind with co-workers and let off steam after a long year. Being a loner will not bring you closer to your co-workers who might actually be awesome people.

So have fun and don’t mess up.
