FRIDAY, 1 DECEMBER: Christmas market and food fair at Montclair Methodist Church, 82 Montclair Road. Take-away suppers or sit-down-and-eat options will be available from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Go and collect a take-away, and browse through the rest. Off-road parking is available.

FRIDAY, 1 DECEMBER: Bluff Methodist Church on the corner of Wesley and Pearce roads (behind Mediclinic) holds a fete from 4pm to 7pm. Food and bargains galore. Call Dawn White on 031-466-3906 for further information.

SATURDAY, 2 DECEMBER: Birdlife Port Natal visits Springside Nature Reserve at 7.15am. The hike will be led by Elena Russell. Confirm attendance, meeting time and place. Contact 031-705-2902 or email elenarussell@telkomsa.net. For the Christmas outing there will be toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches. A silver collection will be made for the conservancy.

SATURDAY, 2 DECEMBER: Arcadia Retirement Home aims to raise more money than usual at this month’s fete, with food stalls selling mac and cheese, macaroni with bacon and cheese, chicken breyani, hamburgers, boerewors-rolls and hotdogs. the normal bric-a-brac, while doll clothes, art, books, milk-tarts and Christmas cakes will also be on offer. WEDNESDAY, 6 DECEMBER: Birdlife Port Natal will walk the Westville trail from 6.15am with Sandi du Preez . Call her on 031-701-4839 or on 073-332-4431. Meet in the car park behind the Westville Civic Centre. Hikers will be walking the Westville trail, and then spend some time in the ‘dog’ park. The area behind the Westville Library is fantastic for early morning birds such as sunbirds, barbets and honeyguides. On the trail, walkers will hope to see all three mannikin species (the magpie mannikin is a special sight). Entrance is free. Take along a chair, coffee/tea and snacks for a picnic afterwards. Note the early starting time, which Mike Roseblade says is essential.
