THURSDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER: Montclair Senior Citizens meets in the Montclair Methodist Church hall at 9.30am. All seniors in the area are welcome to join in a sociable morning. Refreshments cost R5 and raffle tickets will be available at R1.

THURSDAY, 14 SEPTEMBER: South African Military History Society’s monthly meeting takes place at the Murray Theatre, 1st floor Civil Engineering Building, UKZN Howard College campus at 7pm for 7.30pm. Speakers will be Roy Bowman, who will talk about ‘The Dam Busters Revisited. Were they successful?’ and the second talk will be given by Capt Charles Ross (SAN) Ret, who will give his presentation of ‘Lt Col Jack Sherwood Kelly VC, CMG, DSO’. SATURDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER: The South African Writers Circle’s monthly meeting is at Westville library room G4 at 11am where the topic of young adult literature will be discussed. During the course of the year, a series entitled Nuts and Bolts of Writing is presented at these interactive sessions. This month it will be ‘Nuts and Bolts of Writing: Show don’t tell’ conducted by Peter Charter. Non-members are welcome. Members R10, non-members R20. Take a plate of snacks to share. SATURDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER – Mountain Backpackers Club takes a hike to Kloof Gorge. Meet at Kloof Falls Road car park at 8am. Look for the MBC banner. Call hike leader John McGovern on 082-659-5111 between 8am and 1pm. This hike is graded two.

SATURDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER – Mountain Backpackers’ Club takes on a 5km hike for the international coastal clean-up, an important international event on the environmental calendar on 3 September. Meet at 8am, likely at Beachwood Mangroves, but confirm this with organisers. Call hike leader Heidi Cox on 072-101-2498 or email andybza@gmail.com. This hike is graded two.

SUNDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER – Mountain Backpackers’ Club will take part in the Howick day hike in ‘The Ambers’. Enjoy lovely views and plenty of game and birdlife for this combined hike with other clubs around Howick and surrounding areas. A maximum of 12 members can be accommodated, on a first come first served basis. Last booking will be taken by Wednesday, 13 September.

SUNDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER: The Rhodesia Association of South Africa’s (incorporating the Flame Lily Foundation) annual South Coast Rhodie get-together takes place at Poinsettia Park in Kingsway, Amanzimtoti from 11.30am. This is an open invitation to all Rhodesians – young and old – who would like to join in the fun. Take your own meat and a salad to share. The association will supply the meat for the pensioners and the sadza and gravy. Take your own refreshments.
