Start clowning around with guidance from workshop

The workshops, generously subsidised by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, will be led by our artistic director, Jayne Batzofin.

CLOWNS Without Borders South Africa (CWBSA) is looking for a range of KZN-based artists wanting to develop their clowning skills and social upliftment engagement through an intensive three-day workshop in each location.

CWBSA is an artist-led humanitarian organisation dedicated to improving the psycho-social condition of children and communities in areas of crisis through laughter and play.

The workshops, generously subsidised by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, will be led by artistic director, Jayne Batzofin. Having seven years of experience in developing her clowning pedagogy, ranging from the circus, to theatrical, to hospital clowns, Jayne loves these intensive play sessions.

The workshops will cover the basics of theatrical clowning as well as the methodology behind the work of Clowns Without Borders South Africa. No previous clowning experience is required, however participants must have an invested interest in a performance field such as music, singing, dancing, circus, acting and storytelling.

At the end of the workshops, all participants will be placed onto the CWBSA artist database, and can be called on for future tours. Bookings will be required, as space is limited.

The three day workshops take place from 27 to 29 October at the Rhumbelow Theatre, 42 Cunningham Road (off Bartle Road) in Umbilo from 9.30am to 4pm. The cost is R150 for each three-day workshop. Bursaries to cover the workshop cost and local transport (public transport within 100kms of the city centre) are available on request via e-mail. Email Jayne at jayne@cwbsa.org for more details and to book your spot. Send a brief biography/CV and a headshot.
