Formation flying at its best at weekend airshow

Margate Airport hosts the KZN Winter Air Tour on Saturday, 14 June.

The world famous Eqstra Flying Lions will take to the skies this weekend at the Margate Air Show – where they guarantee to delight and amaze spectators with their precision perfect formation flying.

Margate Airport will proudly host the next leg of the KZN Winter Air Tour on Saturday, 14 June.

Promising to be even bigger and better than last year, organisers have pulled out all the stops to thrill crowds – with the undisputed highlight of the day being a display from the world famous Eqstra Flying Lions.

Having been on the aerobatic circuit for the last 15 years, the Eqstra Flying Lions are one of the SA’s leading formation flying teams – thereby firmly establishing themselves as a crowd favourite.

Piloting their distinctive, vintage Harvard aircraft, these courageous men and their magnificent flying machines will thrill crowds as they take to the skies over Margate on Saturday.

Their performance at this year’s show will be as adrenalin-filled as ever, thanks to piloting great Scully Levin, alongside team members, Arnie Meneghelli at number two, Ellis Levin at number three and Sean Thackwray in solo position.

Together they’ll skilfully manoeuvre their aircraft into a series of formations that display the grace and agility synonymous with these World War II greats.

Scully says he’s thrilled that there’s such a passion for aviation in the area. “Saturday’s event is an important one for the KZN South Coast. Aviation is a meaningful aspect of economic and tourism growth – public awareness generated by airshows such as this is invaluable for the broader success of the province.”

Gates open at 9am and with the promise of free entry, thousands are expected, so come early with your picnic blankets and chairs to secure your viewing spot.
