Wentworth Bowling Club crowns new Doug Mitchell champion

Although Krish Naidoo is a newbie on the bowling front, his determination saw him claim victory in the Doug Mitchell Championship.

KRISH Naidoo, a member of Wentworth Bowling Club, clinched the top position in the prestigious Doug Mitchell Championship on January 27, showcasing remarkable skill and determination.

Despite only eight months of experience on the greens, Naidoo has swiftly established himself as a formidable presence within the club. Competing against a field of 16 participants in the Doug Mitchell Championship, he outshone 13 other bowlers to advance to the semi-finals and ultimately claim victory in both the semi-finals, with a 1–8 victory, and the finals, securing a decisive 21–11 win.

Reflecting on his unexpected triumph, Naidoo admitted, “When I was preparing for the tournament, I had no expectation of winning. However, I am very competitive and like to do things to the best of my abilities.”

This victory marked his second tournament participation following his debut in the Port Natal Bowls men’s novice singles on January 20. Naidoo emphasised his dedication to improvement, diligently rectifying past mistakes to enhance his performance.

He expressed gratitude towards his coach, Robin De Gouveia, acknowledging De Gouveia’s pivotal role in nurturing his skills since his initiation into the sport.

“A friend of mine invited me to a different bowling club one day, and we rolled a few bowls. After the game, he told me I should look into joining the club because it’s a good game to keep your mind focused. I then visited the Wentworth Bowling Club frequently just to get a better feel for what it was like before I eventually signed up. They invited me to their bowls for beginners classes, and that’s where the journey started,” said Naidoo.

Encouraging prospective enthusiasts to join the Wednesday beginner bowls classes, Naidoo extends an invitation to experience the sport firsthand. Interested individuals can reach out to Robin De Gouveia on 082 966 8917 or Dawn Spack on 083 453 0272 for further information and enrolment.
