Players aim for the bull’s-eye [Video]

Darts or dart-throwing is a sport where players throw darts at a dartboard.

THE Yellowwood Sports Club’s dart nights have become popular among people of all ages, and it is aimed at promoting darts as a social sport in the Montclair community.

Gathering to compete in a relaxed and socially competitive atmosphere, residents battle it out for the win on Friday nights at the club.

Darts or dart-throwing is a competitive sport, where two or more players throw small, sharp, pointed missiles, called darts, at a round target known as a dartboard, bare-handed.

Points can be scored by hitting specific marked areas of the board, though unlike in sports such as archery, these areas are distributed all across the board and do not follow a principle of points increasing toward the board’s bull’s-eye.

Darts is both a professional shooting sport and a traditional pub game, and it has grown as a sport in South Africa and become a popular game for families.

Tanya Jordaan, organiser of social darts, said anybody is welcome to attend and try their hand at the sport.

“Girls and boys, young and old – everyone is invited to join us. Every week, we play a different game, and we teach as we go. We have different levels of players, and we team up every inexperienced player with an experienced player, therefore the playing field is even.

“The rules change every week. We start at 19:00, and we take about two hours to warm up and play. The initiative is completely free, and we win treats as prizes.

“We also have league players who compete in tournaments and are proud of their achievements. We look forward to growing darts as a social sport,” Jordaan said.
