Anusha Jugoo, the public relations officer for the club, shared that the day’s activities will begin early, with the race kicking off at 06:30. The event will feature a 15km run/walk and a 5km fun walk/run, catering to both seasoned athletes and casual participants. The first 400 finishers of the 15km will receive a complimentary T-shirt, and all participants will be awarded medals, ensuring everyone leaves with a memorable keepsake.

Jugoo added that due to high demand, they have extended the online registration to midnight today (August 29), and late entries will take place at 6 Dhubri Road from 10:00 to 16:00 on August 31. Registration can be done through this registration link, https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/Event.aspx?itemid=1549531418 or at Pick ‘n Pay stores.

In addition to the fun and camaraderie, the event offers an enticing incentive with prize money up for grabs across various categories. This ensures that both competitive runners and newcomers are encouraged to put their best foot forward.

The success of the Spring Day road race is bolstered by the generous support of Gora’s Meat Market, the event’s main sponsor. Jugoo emphasised that this sponsorship has played a crucial role in raising the profile of Merewent Athletic Club, with an expected turnout of 400 to 500 runners this year. “We dream of developing youth athletics within the community and aspire to see a local athlete one day rank in the top 10 of the Comrades Marathon or even compete on the Olympic stage,” she said.

The club said they’re committed to fostering local talent and promoting community involvement with its continued efforts to host events like the Spring Day road race. With the support of the community and local businesses, such as Gora’s Meat Market, the club is paving the way for the next generation of athletes.
