Yellowwood Park Dojo karateka strikes gold at tournament

Melokuhle Mbambo gold in the junior kata category and bronze in the full-contact fighting category.

YOUNG karateka Melokuhle Mbambo from the Yellowwood Park IKO Dojo made an impressive mark at the Best of the Best Top 16 Challenge Cup 2024, held on August 17, at the Sibusisiwe Hall in Mandeni.

Organised by KZN IKO Kyokushinkaikan Karate, this prestigious tournament brings together skilled fighters who have excelled in the SA National tournament, highlighting the elite calibre of competitors. Senpai Dumisani Zakwe emphasised the tournament’s focus on showcasing top fighters from age 12 and up. “This event is designed for seasoned karatekas, starting with the 12–13 age group and extending to senior divisions, ensuring that only the strongest competitors participate,” he said.

Melokuhle delivered a stellar performance, securing a gold medal in the junior kata category and a bronze in the full-contact fighting category for boys aged 12–13 years. Reflecting on his success, Melokuhle shared, “The tournament was challenging, but I really enjoyed it. Seeing my results made me feel proud and reassured me that my hard work paid off.”

His mother, Phila Mbambo, was equally proud of her son’s achievements. “I’m delighted with how well he’s doing. It’s something he’s passionate about, and watching him excel in the sport brings me so much joy. Karate is also instilling important values and discipline in him, which makes me even prouder as a parent,” she expressed.

Melokuhle’s accomplishments at the Best of the Best Top 16 Challenge Cup highlight his dedication and talent, marking him as a rising star in the karate community.
