Ignatius Gorejena placed 11th in the RMB Ultra-Trail Cape Town Marathon.

FOR Ignatius Gorejena, completing a 100-mile ultra trail, and achieving a top position, has been one of his greatest highlights since he started running a few years ago.

The 44-year-old, who lives on The Bluff, said that while growing up, he never anticipated that he would be a runner, but that has become his reality.

Gorejena recently completed the RMB Ultra-Trail Cape Town (UTCT), claiming 11th position.

The UTCT 100-miler takes participants from the northern mountain range of the Mother City to the more remote southern mountains, taking in additional trails from Silvermine to Kalk Bay, Kommetjie, Simonstown and beyond.

“It was my first time doing a 100-miler and competing with international runners. It was definitely the toughest off-road race I have ever run and the toughest race in South Africa with a 7 500m elevation.

“One of the challenges I faced was while training. I didn’t have access to the proper terrain to train in preparation for the race. However, despite the difficulties, giving up was not an option. My greatest highlight was finishing the race, and it was so fulfilling claiming 11th place. I will definitely do it again – I will do my best and let God do the rest,” he said.

Gorejena, a member of the Bluff Athletic Club (BAC), said he started running at the age of 38.

“For most of my life, I never knew I had what it takes to be a runner, and my level of confidence was low. However, over time, my perception changed as I started watching other runners, and I felt I could do it as well. When I started running, I realised that I had the potential, and from that point, I was determined to be the best I could be,” he said.

Gorejena, a handyman, said that while there were challenges, he remained undeterred.

“It’s been a huge challenge not having sponsors, but that didn’t stop me. I keep pushing regardless of my circumstances because I refuse to let that determine my future; instead, it makes me push harder,” he said.

The father of three boys said that there are many benefits to running.

“I love running; it’s become my life. It helps me challenge myself again and again. It also brings me peace and tranquility. I also believe good health is wealth – that’s the most important thing.

“It has given me the opportunity to travel and meet runners from around the world. I have also realised that as an athlete, I am a role model to many out there, and I am inspiring the younger generation,” he said.

Among his accomplishments, Gorejena has completed three Comrades Marathons, earning himself two Bill Rowan medals and a silver medal.
