Upcoming rugby star believes hard work and determination is key

Team captain of Optimum Harlequins Rugby Club's U20s team believes anything is achievable with the right attitude and hard work.

WARRICK van Helsdingen, 19, who lives in Montclair, is the captain of the Optimum Harlequins Rugby Club’s U20s team.

He currently plays inside centre for his team, as well as right-wing for the club’s first team. Warrick said he started playing rugby at a young age.

“I started playing when my father coached Cubs Rugby in Johannesburg and rugby season was always my favourite. I find rugby to be a beautiful game, for all shapes and sizes.

“I love the beauty of the sport and the way it makes me feel watching the ball fly into my hands, the rush of adrenaline, the feeling of breaking through the defensive line and making that perfect tackle,” he said.

Warrick, a project management student, said he initially started playing for the club’s first team in 2022.

“I started out playing in the pre-season when I was 18, then joined the U20s when the season started. Despite being the youngest player, I was made captain after our second game, which has been one of my best highlights since joining,” he said.

Warrick said there were many benefits of playing rugby. “It builds my self-confidence and teaches me life lessons that make me a better person. It also creates a balance in my life, that benefits me now and for the future.

“I also enjoy playing with my team, and the feeling of pride when we run onto the field is amazing. I love the battle and the contact, as well as the friendships that the game brings into my life. The rugby field is my happy place, there is nothing like it,” he said.

He added that some of the qualities a player should possess are physical strength, commitment, communication skills, good character, willingness to lead and follow, sportsmanship, and devotion to one’s team.

Warrick said fitness was the key to having a successful season. “It not only helps you be out on the field for the whole game, but it also prevents you from getting injured. We train hard as a team, doing fitness, handling skills and game plan structures with specific moves and trick plays. However, I also believe that the real hard work is done off the field and in the gym on your own,” he said.

Warrick said he is inspired by Kwagga Smith, who plays for the Springboks. “I am inspired by his work ethic on the field, his fearless approach to the game and his sacrifice in having his nose broken many times. He also plays for my favourite team. The Springboks are the best and will always be my team, I strive to play for them one day,” he said.

Warrick said his advice to those who wish to get involved in the team sport, was to work hard and be dedicated.

“All you need to do is show up for the practices, put in the extra work and stick to it as this game gives back exactly what you put into it,” he said.

The U20 team will be playing against the Collegians in a home game, on August 19, at 15:00.
