FOR young and upcoming rugby star, Jared Williams, some of the key traits a player should possess are discipline, accountability and a drive.

Williams, 19, who lives on The Bluff, is currently the hooker for the Optimum Harlequins Rugby Club’s under 20 team.

Williams said he started playing rugby in primary school at age 11.

“I would watch my friends during rugby practice at school and thought it would be fun. However, after my first practice I fell in love with the game, and never looked back. I then joined the Harlequins club under 13 team.

“I went on to play for my high school’s team, and later received a bursary from the University of Free State and played for the under 20 Varsity Cup. I was also selected to play for the Cheetahs rugby team in the under 20 Currie Cup,” he said.

Williams, who is currently studying towards his bachelors of admin degree, said he enjoyed playing rugby as it allowed him to express himself and showcase his talent on the field.

“I feel like I am unstoppable when I am on that field. It teaches you discipline and determination to do your best. It has also allowed me the opportunity to further my education after school,” he said.

Williams said one of highlights so far, was playing for Cheetahs against the Blue Bulls earlier this year.

“It was a tough game, but the physicality and playing against players of a high level was amazing,” he said.

Williams said he is inspired by Ardie Savea, who plays for the international rugby team, Hurricanes.

“I admire his style of play and how he carries himself. He motivates and inspires me to give my best,” he said.

Williams said his goal was to better himself as a player.

“My aim is to give it my all during every game and try to better my performance each time,” he said.

He added that his advice to those who are keen to play rugby, was to not be afraid and have self-confidence.

“Many people are afraid to do things out of fear of making a mistake, however, making mistakes in this game is not the end of the world, it’s all about how you fix your mistake. You must also be able to take accountability from a young age, as it will help you grow as a player and person,” he said.

He also encouraged the youth to get involved in sports.

“There are great benefits, as it keeps you fit and healthy, away from social-ills, and brings you great opportunities,” he said.

Those interested in trying out for the team, can attend one of their training sessions held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 18:00, at the Harlequins sports grounds situated at 50 Garcin Place on The Bluff.

The U20 team will be playing against the Midlands team at the Harlequins sports ground, on May 27, at 14:00.
