Drift competition returns to Durban

Drifters from all over the country will head down to Suncoast on April 15 for the national competition.

THE Red Bull Car Park Drift returns to Durban for the third year running, bringing together the best amateur and pro drifters from around the country to battle it out for the coveted ‘King of Drift’ in Mzansi at Suncoast on April 15.

Drifting is a motorsport in which the driver uses the throttle, brakes, clutch, gear shifting and steering input to keep the car in a state of oversteer while manoeuvring from turn to turn.

All-in-all, the sport demands the perfect balance of speed, style, and fearlessness from its drivers. The origins of the sport date back to the 1950s, and it made its way to South Africa around 2004, with pioneer drifters such as Faheem Salie and the legendary DJ and TV host, Ready D. Since then, the sport has grown with several drivers and crews shooting up across the country.

In the last two years that Red Bull Car Park Drift has taken place, more than 80 drivers have been put to the test by the tricky obstacle course prepared by Red Bull Motorsport Athlete Rally and Hill Climb Champion, and Guinness World Record holder, Abdo Feghali.

Last year, Jason Webb impressed the judges the most with his finesse and controlled driving skills, to lift the trophy and represent Mzansi at the World Final held in Saudi Arabia.

Drifters from all over the country will head down to Suncoast and be put through their paces until the top 16 are selected to compete for the title on April 15, where the 2023 national winner will be crowned and go represent South Africa at the World Final in Qatar later in the year.
