Bluff’s pro bowler scoops third place in SA championships

The Stella Park Bowling Club member, who competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2022, said the singles championships were by far one of the most difficult to win.

BLUFF’s pro bowler, Wayne Rittmuller, came third at the thrilling SA Masters Singles Championship held in Cape Town from March 17 to 19.

Proud to have competed in the championship for the fifth time, Rittmuller said he enjoyed the serene venue, which was the picture perfect Western Province Cricket Club with a view of Table Mountain in the background.

“On the morning of the first day of play, we had some light rain which persisted throughout the first game and into the second game before coming to an end and giving way to beautiful weather for the rest of the weekend.

“This year was the start of a new format in sets play rather than the traditional first to 21 shorts, so all players had to adapt to the new environment as well as the format of play. I lost my first game on a tie breaker, then winning the next game also on a tie breaker and finishing the day with another tie breaker loss.

“I went on to win three of my remaining four games and finishing just outside of the medals in third place in my category. This was my best finish so far in the SA Masters,” said Rittmuller.

The Stella Park Bowling Club member, who competed in the Commonwealth Games in 2022, added that the singles championships were by far one of the most difficult to win.

“I now focus my attention on Australia as I prepare to play in the World Bowls Indoor Championships which begins on May 7, at Warrilla Bowls Club in Australia.
