Bowlers hit the green at Wentworth

Wentworth Bowling Club’s events are in full swing for the start of the New Year.

WITH the year’s calendar showing January only halfway through, bowling clubs in the district have been busy with domestic and interclub activities, and Wentworth Bowling Club (WBC) is no exception.

Recently the club successfully hosted 36 bowlers from clubs around the district in their quest to win their sections to qualify for the play offs of the Port Natal Bowls pro10 championship.

Over the past two Saturdays, the club’s novice bowlers have been travelling to Durban Bowling Club to take up the challenge in the Port Natal novice singles knock out competition. Each club participant has demonstrated a great competitive spirit and has done the club proud. Congratulations to Wayne and Amelia Booysens, who have won through to the next rounds in the men and women’s sections respectively.

The club’s open singles champions, Troy Garland and Eileen du Plessis, represented WBC in the Port Natal champion of champion tournament at Stella Park Bowling Club. Eileen played a grueling game against the Northlands Bowling Club champion and unfortunately lost her first round game by a mere two shots.

Troy played through by defeating the champions from Bluff and Gillitts Bowling Clubs to win a spot in the semi-final against the champion from Parkhill Bowling Club.

Members will be in full support of Troy, Wayne and Amelia, as they pursue further success and eventual championship status.

Friday’s Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls saw Dave Carroll, Phil Hill and Mike Hough accumulate a healthy plus 17 shot difference to take top spot. Gees Dennis and new club member, Jeff Aberdeen, managed the second spot. The sportsmen’s prize went the way of Ian Hayes, Mark Russell-Bolton and Ori Harripersad (another newly registered Wentworth member).

Graham Bransby tucked the raffled pork roast under his arm before leaving the club and Maria Cavanagh, Gees Dennis, Gary Lelong and Graham all pocketed a share of the winnings from the two 60/ 40 boards. Members are reminded that entries are open for the club’s monthly breakfast trips and big jim pairs competitions.

The club is hosting the first round of the new novice bowler initiative which has been instigated by East Coast Bowls and will be played monthly at different venues around the district. An entry form for the newbie pairs is on the club notice board.

Bowlers are urged to formulate trips teams and get entries in for the Bluff Bowling Club’s annual Friday twilight trips competition which runs for five consecutive Fridays. WBC members traditionally show this festive event strong support. Contact Russell Fuller on 082 755 2526 to enter.
