Old friendships renewed at boys derby
The day was well supported and a great success with many old friendships renewed.
OLD rivalries and friendships were once again renewed through the beloved game of soccer at the Old Boys’Memorial Day held at the Fynnland Combined Sports Club on Saturday, 31 August.
Bayview FC went up against Fynnland FC at this year’s installment of the event. The ever young over 50s kicked off at 1.30pm, followed by the over 35 babies at 3pm. This annual game is really a tribute to both clubs and to the players such as Michael Waterman, Jackie Clifford and Craig Wilson who have passed on and the dedication of the players meeting up to represent their clubs each year to play a match in the true spirit of the game.
The day was well supported and a great success with many old friendships renewed. The over 50s game was won 2-1 to Bayview FC and it was the first time that Bayview has ever won this game. The over 35’s game was drawn 2-2 all and the trophy was shared by Bayview FC and Fynnland FC. Bayview coach, Cyril Pulvenis, said that it is always hard to single out a specific player as the majority of the players are over 60 years of age. “Mike Wellbeloved and Eddie Fhuri are 64 years old and it is amazing how these guys keep on going,” he added. Paul Healy from Fynnland FC over 35 side was voted as the most enthusiastic player of the day.
