Durban Academy rugby boys outshine hosts

The boys did their supporters proud, with the U15 team winning 24-10 and the first team winning 42-0.

THE U15 and U16 rugby boys of Durban Academy High School came out guns blazing at their matches against Brettonwood High School on Friday, 2 August, at Brettonwood High.

U15 Asanda Mungwe of Durban Academy maintains ball possession and attempts to score a try for his team.

The boys did their supporters proud, with the U15 team winning 24-10 and the first team winning 42-0.
“Brettonwood is always an eagerly anticipated fixture for us, but in recent history we have been on the losing side with only our first rugby team showing dominance over the host. We started well in the U15 rugby game and showed good dominance in the forwards. Sphelele Mngoma and Samkelo Mkhize were dominant in contact and laid the platform for our backs to score some good tries. The half time score was 24-0 which allowed us to ring the changes and give all our players an opportunity. The final score was 24-10,” said coach and Durban Academy sports coordinator, Naseeb Abrahams.

The final game of the day was the first team rugby and soccer boys games. The rugby boys continued their dominance over the host with a comfortable victory and a good team effort lead by Allen Bushe with a hat trick of tries.
There was also a first girls soccer match on the day, which proved to be very entertaining with ball possession being kept well by the Durban Academy girls. Naseeb said that the team showed a good improvement in their performance, finishing the game with a score of 1-1, with Emily Fulton was the stand-out performer.

“The eagerly anticipated fixture was the first team boys soccer match with Brettonwood winning the last four encounters. Both teams were even in the first half with Brettonwood getting good opportunities to score, but were denied by good goalkeeping keeping the teams deadlocked at half time. The second half saw the opening stages dominated by Durban Academy with their wide play becoming a factor and creating many opportunities to score. Eventually the deadlock was broken from a set piece with Sithabiso Tiyo providing the crucial opener. Brettonwood came fighting back and with five minutes left to make themselves open to a counter, which provided the second goal to Durban Academy killing the game off with the final score being 2-0.

Durban Academy U15 Ntando Goqo throws the ball after receiving an outline pass.

In the girls first rugby game it was evenly balanced with both teams having opportunities to score, but strong defense by both teams saw the game finish at 0-0. “Overall we are very proud of all results and our players,” concluded Naseeb.
