Enjoy lawn bowls with Wentworth club

“Sport is friendship. Sport is health. Sport is education. Sport is life. Sport brings the world together.”

AT the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the president of the international Olympic committee addressed the competitors with the words, “Sport is friendship. Sport is health. Sport is education. Sport is life. Sport brings the world together.”

These words epitomise the goals of Wentworth Bowling Club. The game of lawn bowls encompasses all the values highlighted by Samaranch and is a sport that offers an avenue in which young, old and disabled can participate. The club extends an open invitation to the community to enjoy the health benefits and camaraderie of lawn bowls by joining their development bowls initiative on a Wednesday afternoon. Each week the club welcomes new faces to this event as the interest in the challenging, healthy sport grows. Contact Margaret Walters on 082-961-8538 for details.

The development bowls played on Monday, 8 April saw newcomer Amelia Booysens team up with Wentworth’s Vic Mc Creanor, to take the top spot on the podium and leave with the winner’s reward.

The results from Saturday’s semi-finals of the men’s drawn trips result heralds a humdinger of a final between teams comprising Matthew Lassak, Brad Claassens and Johan Nel, who will face off against Simon and Troy Garland with their 13-year-old powerhouse lead, Kearan Lassak. Members can look for to a nail-biter of a game that will present tactical strategies as the skips try to build heads to ensure their opposition’s path to the jack is blocked at every possibility.

The first round of the men’s nominated pairs championship is carded for Saturday, 18 May. These games promise spectators exciting duels that should keep the crowd glued to their seats as they witness lines of attack the bowlers plan with their chosen partners.

This week all followers of lawn bowls are focused on the results of the Bowls South Africa women’s nationals championships being competed at various clubs in the Port Natal Bowls district. Congratulations are extended to the two Wentworth pairs teams – Maree Sadie and Jenny Greeff, and Jay Retief and Cheryl Waterman. Both teams finished second in their sections after playing five grueling games against the echelon of South Africa’s bowling fraternity. Best bowling wishes are extended to the Eileen du Plessis, Gwen Tait, Joanne Jordaan and Cheryl Waterman who will compete in the fours section on Monday and Tuesday and to Maree Sadie who is playing in the open singles section on Wednesday.
