Brighton’s Top Gun tennis hopes dashed in play-offs

Tournament director Iain Smith was happy with how the proceedings went on day one.

THE Brighton Tennis Club team that participated in last weekend’s Top Guns Club Tennis Tournament in Sun City bowed out in the play-offs, after overcoming their opposition teams in the first and second rounds on Saturday and Sunday, 23 and 24 February.

Former professional tennis player Natalie Grandin and her Brighton teammates were pushed to the very end of day one’s proceedings, winning both matches 2-1 against Old Mutual and Polokwane Aces respectively.

Grandin reflected on the day, saying: “It’s tough, doesn’t matter who you play. We enjoyed our tennis today but we’re looking forward to tomorrow. We come up against some tough opposition but we are ready,” she said.

Their hopes were high after their first pool two match on Sunday saw them overcome Free State’s Kovsies 2-1. However in the play-offs, the Brighton team couldn’t match the efforts of Park Rand, going down 2-0 to bow out of the competition which concluded as the Sun went to print on Monday afternoon.

Tournament director Iain Smith was happy with how the proceedings went on day one. “It was a fantastic day of tennis the results went according to the seeding, but there were some close games,” said Smith.
