CLUB competitions are in full swing at Wentworth Bowling Club.
The Grace Hare trips has been played through to the final stage.
This will be contested between the teams comprising Spider Williams, Phil Hill and Honey Kitchenbrand and that of Simon and Troy Garland playing with Cheryl Waterman.
The Roley Taylor pairs final is taking the form of a round robin competition to avoid a team having a semi-final bye. Teams playing are Jay Retief and Troy Garland, Neville Dolley and Cheryl Waterman and Norman Webster and Geanne Mitchell.
The women’s open singles and the Doug Mitchell singles competition for men both started this weekend. Members in contention are reminded to keep checking the noticeboards for postings.
The spirit of camaraderie was tangible at the club on Saturday when the men turned out to mark for the women’s singles, allowing all posted games to take to the rink in the morning. In the afternoon the women reciprocated and assisted with the marking for the men’s singles. This spirit goes a long way towards building the club. Thank you to all who were involved.
Fridays Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls saw Graham Bransby, Robbie Carr and Johan Nel take top honours for the morning. Norman Moore, Robin de Gouviea and Buck Boettiger secured a second place. The sportsmen’s prize went to Herbie Roux, Phil Hill and Vic McCreanor. The raffled beef went to Jo Jo Jordaan and Tomcat Cavanagh took home the ‘chook chooks’. Gerald C Royle and Robbie Carr shared the spoils from the 60/40 board.
This week’s bowling calendar includes the Cedar Falls pairs on Wednesday morning, the Tomasina men’s casual bowls on Friday and the Grand Raid Spur Big Jim pairs on Sunday morning. All these competitions start at 9am.
The wheelbarrow full of prizes and pamper handbag fundraisers for Kearan Lassak are rolling along nicely. Members are asked to contribute to these by buying tickets or adding to the contents of the wheelbarrow or the handbag. Thanks are extended to Ann Bonthrone for her dogged determination to keep the momentum flowing on these fundraising drives.
Thoughts and prayers are with Joe McNamara and his family. Joe is in Westville Hospital undergoing treatment for a head injury following a nasty fall. Everyone hopes to see him back at the club soon. Past president John Somerville paid the club a surprise visit on Saturday. It was wonderful to see him and everyone hopes his health continues to improve so these visits become more frequent.
The Wednesday development bowls is gaining momentum as more and more new faces show up at the club. Lawn bowls is suitable for a wide range of competitors, seniors and youths. Whether a player wishes to become a competitive bowler or simply enjoy the social aspect on the greens, they will be accommodated. Play starts at 2.30pm and participants should be at the club to register their tab. Direct any enquiries to Margaret Walters on 082-961-8538. The club’s experienced bowlers are asked to find the time to assist in these games. Coaching the finer points and etiquette of the game is important and needs to be highlighted at the early stages of play.
