Hikers to traverse Roosfontein’s preserved natural treasures

Lovely hike through 55 hectare reserve, incorporating some road walking down to the Station Rd complex.

DURBAN Ramblers Hiking Club looks forward to the Herbies Hike at Roosfontein Nature Reserve on Saturday, 13 January.

Call hike leader Philip on 082-417-0204 to confirm your attendance for this 7km hike, which is graded two or moderate.

Roosfontein Nature Reserve, named after Roosfontein farm owned by the Voortrekker pioneer Francois Roos, borders both Queensburgh and Westville. This area had been earmarked for a golf course and casino with some housing. Fortunately, environmentalists fought for the preservation of this beautiful, typically African natural area which is home to many grassland birds, wild flowers, North Coast grasslands and the endangered dwarf chameleon.

The hike will traverse through grasslands and riverine forest. Ensure you take along enough drinking water. Hikers can meet afterwards for drinks at the Pavilion. A R20 donation will go towards the upkeep of the reserve. Meet at 1.45pm at the parking lot outside Westville prison.

On Sunday, 14 January Ramblers take on Burman Bush in Morningside.

Confirm your attendance for this 14km hike which is grade two to three with hike leader Philip Collyer on 082-417-0204. This is a lovely hike through this 55 hectare reserve, incorporating some road walking down to the Station Road complex. The hike starts and finishes at Mitchell Park, where you have the option of visiting the zoo or tea garden afterwards.
