WENTWORTH Bowling Club wishes all its members a prosperous 2018 filled with camaraderie on the greens, good fellowship off the greens and good health.

The year is sure to be a busy one, kicking off with the district novice, open and senior singles for men and women in January and February.

Entry forms for these are on the board and members are asked to pay these urgent attention. Fees for Bowls South Africa and Port Natal must be paid to deem bowlers eligible to enter these competitions.

The festive season was especially busy as both competition secretaries posted the final games to complete their complements for the year.

The women’s nominated pairs final proved to be one of those events that will be spoken of for years to come. Ann Bonthrone and Honey Kitchenbrand took on Maria Cavanagh and Gwen Tait on a hot, humid day that extracted the best bowls the women could offer. In a three hour marathon game, the lead changed hands many times and after the required 21 ends, the scores were level. Ann and Honey won the toss to take the mat in the extra end and fought to claim the title by one shot. Congratulations are extended to all four women for a game well played in the true spirit of sportsmanship for glory of lawn bowls.

The last game of the 2017 season was the women’s drawn pairs final. This was played between Cheryl Waterman and Geanne Mitchell who competed against Eileen du Plessis and Margaret Walters. Eileen and Margaret could not put a bowl wrong as they stormed to an early and maintained supremacy to claim the title for 2017.

Bowlers are thanked for their support of the competition secretaries throughout 2017 and are asked to maintain this in the coming year. The positive support of members is integral to any club and WBC looks forward to a successful year of flourishing bowls.

Past president John Somerville has been readmitted to hospital for further treatment. Recovery is hard work, but John is not alone. Not a day goes by that he is not thought of, spoken of and wished well by his Wentworth family. We miss you. Get well soon.

Any members of the community wishing to try their hand at the game of bowls are invited to attend the development bowls on a Wednesday afternoon. Bowls is a game for people of any age and is an activity that can be mastered from a young age. Play starts at 2.30pm. Players are required to be at the club by 2pm to put a tab in.
