IN another week in which the inconsistent weather required the closure of greens, competitions at the Wentworth Bowling Club again took a back step.

A delay in the men’s competitions means that the men’s drawn trips finalists Brian Smith, Moses Ndava and Matthew Lassak are awaiting the result of the second semi-final between Jumbo Nel, Simon Garland and JJ Jonker.

Jumbo and co will take on Terry Micholson and Kevin and Brad Claasen to secure a spot in the final.

Finalists in the men’s nominated fours, Clynton William, Thys Moolman, Brendon Davies and Rob Armstrong anticipate their battle between them and the winners of the second semi-final to be contested between Gary Moffatt, Ron ‘Bias’ Addinall, Victor Shaw, Johan Nel and Brian Smith with his team comprising Robin de Gouveia, Dave Carroll and Troy Garland.

The elements smiled on the greens on Friday, 17 November when the bowlers in the Bluff Meats men’s competition were able to enjoy the sunshine and their weekly bowling activity. Winners this week were Brian Smith and Kurt Spack who amassed a resounding plus 18. In second place were Coy Schrauwen, Robbie Carr and Ron Parsonage. The sportsmen’s prize went to Roy Govender and Terry Micholson.

Tomcat Cavanagh and Andy Cloete chose the winning tickets on the Bluff Meat Supply sponsored roasts raffles and walked away with pork and beef roasts respectively. Ken Koch and Gerald C Royle shared the spoils from the first 60/40 board and Errol Pienaar and Andy Cloete pocketed the booty from the second board.

The women’s Christmas lunch has been booked for Sunday, 10 December. This will be held in the club hall. Details are posted on the noticeboard and the women are asked to book their place to facilitate the catering plans.

This Sunday will see the regular bowlers in the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim competition take to the greens in an attempt to pocket the prizes. The club thanks Grand Rapid Spur for its continued support of this competition. Play starts at 9am.

Members are reminded that a committee has been elected to head up the team that comprises all the members of Wentworth Bowling Club. As a team everyone needs to work together and co-operative to achieve the common mission – to improve the standard of bowls in the club. Each member needs to accept their mutual accountability to the club’s elected committee and work with them at all levels. The club looks forward to a year during which any complaints, criticisms and acknowledgments are directed through the correct channels in an effort to uplift the club and its reputation.

Any members of the community who wish to try their hand at the game of bowls are invited to attend the development bowls on a Wednesday afternoon. Bowls is a game for people of any age and is an activity that can be mastered from a young age. Play starts at 2.30pm.
