Sunflower Fund walk raises almost R60,000

The atmosphere was festive with the Dance Direction dancers, Northlands Girls High School drummers and the Prep Gumboot dancers entertaining the crowd.

SOME 1,000 participants donned their Sunflower Topes to take part in and support the 11th annual Pick n Pay Hyper 5km fun run/walk for charity in support of the Sunflower Fund and loved ones who had lost their battle to leukaemia.

The event took place on Sunday, 10 September from the Suncoast amphitheatre, out onto the promenade and back.

A festive atmosphere prevailed with the Dance Direction dancers, Northlands Girls High School drummers and the Prep Gumboot dancers entertaining the crowd.

Five substantial prizes ranging from pamper treatments vouchers to boat cruise and meal vouchers were handed over to the delighted lucky draw winners.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) collected several pints of much-needed blood during the event.

The R67,050 raised will allow the fund to raise awareness, educate and recruit new blood stem cell donors. The more donors on the registry, the more hope of life that patients diagnosed with leukaemia have of finding their 1:100,000 donor match.

The Sunflower Fund thanks Pick n Pay Hypermarket, Round Table Natal North Coast, Suncoast, Webtickets, Graham Carruthers Photography, Black Coffee, the Sunflower Fund volunteers, the media, parks department, SANBS and the valued prize sponsors for making this possible. Thanks also go to the Dance Direction dancers, Northlands Girls High School, Durban Prep High School and Curves Durban North for providing the entertainment.
