THE much-needed rain last week dictated that many of the planned bowling activities at Wentworth Bowling Club did not happen.

Tuesday morning’s men’s bowls, the Chicken Shack pairs and the Rawsons breakfast trips were all cancelled because the greens were deemed unplayable.

Friday morning’s Bluff Meat Supply men’s bowls was won by Kurt Spack, Reg Behr and Hennie Marais with a resounding 10 shot lead over Gerald C Royle and Travis Engelbrecht who ended the morning in second place. Sportsmen’s prize went to Koy Schrauwen, Dudley Sanders and Neil Smith.

Andy Cloete chose number 57 on the pork raffle sheet to walk away with the substantial roast and Kurt Spack took home the raffled beef roast. Graham Bransby and Dave Arnold shared the booty from the first 60/40 board and Dave Carroll and Travis Engelbrecht each pocketed a share from the second board.

Saturday saw the club playing host to a section in the Port Natal senior men’s singles competition. Thanks are extended to those members who volunteered to mark the games and the kitchen team who provided delicious teas and lunches.

On Sunday the monthly Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition was played in ideal bowling conditions. Winners were Hilton Lassak and Phil ‘The Milkman’ Hill with a very respectable four plus 23. In second place were Herbie Roux and Johan Nel. Second session prize went to Craig Herholdt and Michael Schudel.

The first 60/40 board prizes were won by Michael Schudel and Ellen Loots and the second board saw Keagan Bauristhene and Martin Guant share the prizes. Johan Vorster chose the winning number on the raffle sheet and was rewarded with a sizeable roast.

The community is reminded that bowls is a game that can be played by the young and older generations. Everyone is invited to attend the development bowls played on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm. This is a friendly, social activity sponsored by the Family and Friends Guesthouse and includes a monthly braai which allows new bowlers to meet and socialise with current club members.

Club president, John Somerville is currently facing some daunting health issues. Members wish him well and look forward to see him on the road to good health in the near future.

Any enquiries regarding the club kitchen and the booking of the hall and its surrounds can be directed to Susan on 078-277-1826. The hall is available for hiring for private functions and braai facilities are on offer for corporate functions and team building events. The big screen can be set up to watch sporting highlights.
