EVERY Friday morning for the past 24 years the focus at the Wentworth Bowling Club has been on the men’s bowls run by Tom and Maria Cavanagh.

This initiative, started by Tom, has stood the test of time and is still a very popular weekly event on the bowling calendar.

With the recent support of sponsorship provided by Bluff Meat Supply, the competition has gained strength and has become an even more attractive occasion for bowlers to win the prizes on offer.

Last Friday saw club stalwart, Graham Bransby, skip Dave Carroll (snr) and Ashley Sherratt ascend into first place on the podium. Colin Howes and his team of Dave Buckland and Henry Welgemoed were three shots behind in second place. The sportsmen’s prize went the way of Colin Nicholas, Buck Boettiger and Ron Parsonage. The raffled pork roast was won by a beaming Phil ‘The Milkman’ Hill and Dave Carroll happily accepted the substantial beef roast. Maria Cavanagh was the winner on the first 60/40 board and Gerald C Royle pocketed the second prize. Ron Parsonage took the first prize off the second board and Gerald made it two in a row when his number was pulled from the bag for the second prize.

The Family and Friends development bowls played on Wednesday welcomed Lulu Potgieter back to the greens after a long recuperation following her stint in hospital. Lulu celebrated her return to the game by pairing with Eileen du Plessis to take first place. The biscuit prize went to Honey Kitchenbrand and Dudley Sanders. Dudley and Margaret Walters shared the spoils of the 60/40 board. The development bowls initiative has seen many new bowlers promoted to full membership status who are now competing in club competitions. Members of the community are invited to join in by attending every Wednesday afternoon. Play starts at 3pm.

The teams competing in the Rawsons breakfast trips competition are reminded to check the leader board on the main notice board. The accumulated competition ends in June and prizes for the year will be awarded down to 24th place.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday saw the women compete in the point singles competition and men trying to secure the Doug Mitchell singles trophy take to the green. All of the games were very closely contested and provided spectators with numerous occasions to applaud spectacular bowls. Thanks are extended to those members who assisted with marking to ensure as many games as possible were played. On Wednesday two quarter final games in the women’s point singles competition will be played at 2pm. These games promise to be exciting contests and spectators are invited to support the women.

Good bowling wishes are extended to the Ann Bonthrone, Bernie Pool and Ruth Petzer who are competing in the PNB novice singles competition at Durban Bowling Club on Saturday morning. Wentworth’s Zoë Dougall is the current novice champion and the club hopes one of the women will bring the trophy back home.

After recovering from his ill health and a spell in hospital, Oom Dirk Venter returned home and was on the road to gaining his full strength. Unfortunately a fall at home resulted in him cracking vertebrae, requiring further hospitalisation. He has been given a six-month break from bowls but hopefully will be returning to the club soon in support of his fellow bowling members.

Buks Botha and Spider Williams celebrated their birthdays last week. Best wishes for a successful 2017 are extended to both members.
