LAST week saw much activity on the Wentworth Bowling Club greens.

On Wednesday morning the Chicken Pairs competition was played.

Tom Cloete paired up with Zoë Dougall to take top honours. Two shots behind were Bob Hayward and Derrick Stevens. Second session went to Peter Snyman and Wessie van der Westhuizen. Next month’s Chicken Shack pairs will be played on 30 November.

In the afternoon, the club’s Grace Hare trips final was played. The 2016 champions are the family team of Oom Dirk Venter and Johnny ‘Mooiman’ and Eileen du Plessis. Congratulations are extended to the winners.

Thursday morning saw a full contingent of bowlers enjoy a hearty breakfast before contesting for prizes in the Rawson’s breakfast trips competition. Clear of the field was another family team comprising Mel and Ann Hewer and her brother, Bob Hayward. In second place were Luvoyo Ndava, Derek Steven and Chad Wilson. Dave Rowe who teamed up with Kurt and Dawn Spack took the second session prize. Reg Behr won the raffled whiskey and Paula Osman and Dave Rowe won the Rawsons red wine. Steve Evenwell was the meat raffle winner and Jumbo Nel, Robbie Carr, Paula Osman and Eric Coetzee all had luck on the 60/40 boards. The next Rawsons breakfast trips competition will be contested on 24 November.

Rain stopped play on Friday morning but bowlers for the Bluff Meats men’s bowls turned up at the club so the roasts donated by Bluff Meat Supply were raffled. The pork was won by Ken Koch and Gwen Tait took home the beef roast. Dorro Dorrofield won the booty off the first 60/40 board and Tom Cloete took the second prize. Not to be outdone, Tom took first prize on the second board and Coy Schrauwen scooped the second prize.

On Saturday morning the annual derby between Bluff and Wentworth Bowling Clubs was held at Wentworth BC. Congratulations to the Bluff men and women’s teams who retained both the Bo Eliovson trophy and the coveted teddy bear. Games were played in true sporting fashion and the real winner was the game of bowls as the friendly camaraderie continued from the morning’s bowls through to the braai and festivities that followed. Special thanks go to the Family and Friends bowlers who contributed to the sponsorship of the braai packs for the bowlers.

Sunday morning heralded the monthly Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs competition. This month’s winners were the Bluff team of Greg Dorrofield and Jorge Santos who obviously made a quick recovery after Saturday’s merrymaking but, by their own admission are the local ‘dodos’. The pair were holding seven and Greg had a bowl in hand. With an obvious draw shot available, Jorge called Greg to take out their opponent’s closest bowl. Greg went to the head to check and also missing the clear draw shot, returned to the mat and played a running shot through the head, thereby failing to score the perfect eight and making two insurance companies very happy.

In second place was the Wentworth team of Ben Newton and Zoë Dougall. Second session prize went to Wayne Smith and Victor Shaw. Allan Ritchie and Margaret Walters were the winners on the first 60/40 board and Ann Bonthrone and Kitty Schaefer pocketed the prizes off the second board. The raffled meat prize was won by Ronal Morel. November’s Grand Rapids Big Jim pairs will be played on Sunday, 27 November.

This week the club women’s point singles final between Maree Sadie and Zoë Dougall will be played. Women in contention for the nominated pairs competition are asked to arrange their games this week. The competition has been dogged with delays due to rain and matches need to be finalised before the end of the week. The draw is on the board in the women’s rest room. The women are also asked to record their intention to attend the Christmas lunch on the list on the board.

Family and Friends development bowlers are reminded of the monthly braai that follows this week’s bowls.
