Interclub challenge comes to Wentworth

On Friday morning the regular faces who compete in the Bluff Meats men’s bowls will take to the greens.

WENTWORTH Bowling Club’s (WBC) Family and Friends development bowls is growing in popularity and each week more new faces are seen on the green.

This week’s winners were Johan Nel and Victor Shaw who have obviously devised a system of hand signals for communication.

The biscuit prize went to Zoë Dougal and Lucille Potgieter. Lorraine White quickly hoarded the first prize from the 60/40 in one of the new handbags she has acquired. Phil ‘The Milkman’ Hill got to spend the second prize.

The prizes for Bluff Meats’ men’s bowls were contested on Friday morning. Winners were Terry Micholson, Dave Carroll and Hennie Marais who won in a count out with Bob Harward and Derek Stevens. The sportsmen’s prize went the way of Jumbo Nel, Barry Buckland and Ron ‘Wrong Bias’ Addinall.

Jumbo Nel was all smiles when his number was pulled from the bag to give him the pork raffle and Wessie van der Westhuizen was the happy winner of the beef roast. Ken Koch and Tomcat Cavanagh were the winners on the first 60/40 board and Peter Snyman and Derek Stevens shared the spoils from the second board.

This week saw two members celebrate birthdays. Ann Bonthrone can finally call herself a senior citizen and is eligible to add another competition to her bowling calendar as she qualifies for the club veteran’s singles competition after celebrating her big 60 in fine style. At the other end of the scale, Zoë Dougal, the club’s baby bowler, commemorated her 19th birthday. The club wishes both these special members the best and a year filled with love, laughter and good bowling.

A busy week lies ahead of bowlers at WBC. The week kicks off with bowlers competing in the South Coast pensioner’s league who will contest for points at 9am. The monthly Chicken Shack pairs completion will be played on Wednesday morning at 9am.

On Wednesday afternoon the final of the club’s Grace Hare trips competition will be played between the family team of Oom Dirk Venter, Johnny and Eileen du Plessis who will take on Dave Carroll, ably supported by Honey Kitchenbrand and Bernie Pool.

Thursday morning heralds the ever popular Rawsons breakfast trips. Play starts at 9am but contestants are reminded to get to the club early to enjoy their breakfast before bowls.
